Title: 111 Mass Faculty Use of Technology Inside & Outside the Classroom – Fall 2025

IST Service Desk Hours and Contact Information

The Service Desk hours for the fall semester are:

  • Monday to Friday: 7:30 a.m. to 10:00 p.m.
  • Saturday and Sunday: 8:30 a.m. to 5:00 p.m.

You can email the Service Desk at caphelp@georgetown.edu or use our appointment scheduling portal for all your IT needs. We are located at McDonough Hall, room 152.

Teaching On Campus

  • Please use the classroom laptop for all instructional purposes. BYOD (Bring Your Own Device) support in our classrooms is only available through Zoom.
  • If you need to schedule an AV tech to be there before your class, you can fill out a Classroom Technology Support request ahead of time. Faculty may call for assistance before or during their class using the Zoom Hotline speed dial on the classroom phone (located on the wall in each classroom), or by calling 202-662-ZOOM. IST will deploy on-call staff as needed, however, please be aware that there could be a high volume of calls in the first few days of classes which may delay assistance. Classroom support is available during the time classes are in session.
  • CNDLS is also a valuable resource for Panopto and classroom instruction best practice training.

Teaching Online

  • Instructional Continuity: In the event that the University moves all or most classes online due to instructional continuity being in place, faculty may need to teach online using the ‘Zoom Conferencing’ link in Canvas.

Technology Updates

  • Wi-Fi: during your first visit to 111 Mass you may need to reconnect to Saxanet. To do so follow these instructions. There should be no other difference in your online experience.
  • ZOOM captions: Moving forward, participants will be able to turn on captions during a meeting without the host needing to take any action.

To enable automated captions, please follow these instructions:

  • Zoom meeting participants will see a “Show Captions” button with a “CC” icon at the bottom of their Zoom meeting window. Click on the button to turn on automated captions.
  • Once captions are turned on, the same button will say “Hide Captions.” Click it again to turn off captions.
  • Click the “Up Arrow” next to the “CC” icon to change the language of automated captions.
  • All participants will be informed when captions are turned on in a meeting. Each participant can decide whether to turn automated captions on or off on their own computer or mobile device.
  • While automated captioning is not a replacement for live captioning or ASL interpreters, it is a useful accessibility tool. This new default setting will make Zoom meetings more accessible and reduce the time it takes for participants who use automated captions to enable them.
